My Favorite Client Ever (And Yes, I'm Biased)

In over 20 years of event planning, I have worked with some incredible clients. I have helped associations launch, conferences thrive, supported organizations through complex logistical challenges, and watched rooms full of professionals connect in ways that moved the needle on their industries. That work energizes me.

But I have to be honest: none of it compares to my most rewarding event to date. And no offense to any client past or present, this one was personal. I planned my son's Bar Mitzvah party.

A Year in the Making

From the first concept conversation to the final playlist, this event took more than a year to bring to life. What made it different was not the timeline. It was the intention behind every single decision -- who knows a child better than his mother? Every element was chosen to reflect one very specific person: a kid who loves playing basketball and bleeds New York Knicks blue and orange.

We built what I can only describe as an "elevated basketball" experience. I am officially coining that as a new event category, and I highly recommend it.

What "Elevated Basketball" Actually Looks Like

Cocktail hour kicked off with pop-a-shot stations and personalized trivia, trivia my son crafted himself to keep his guests genuinely engaged. The dance floor carried the basketball theme through, featuring his logo at center court. The kids' side of the room included a "locker" setup with a basketball bag for their goodies, each cubby labeled with a guest's name, and a customizable basketball station where an artist painted names in graffiti on a take-home basketball. Prizes throughout the night included Knicks beanies, Brunson jerseys, glow sticks, and party favorites.

Five hours. Games. Interaction. Dancing. Feasting. No cell phones.

And I will not pretend it was only the kids having fun. We were all completely locked in from start to finish. That is the goal of any great event, and it was incredibly rewarding to pull it off for the person who means the most to me. My son gave me a huge hug and whispered "Thanks, Mom. Everything was perfect." I'll hang onto that as we embark on the teenage years...

What Event Professionals Can Take Away

Avivant Partners does not typically specialize in social or non-corporate events. But this experience reminded me why the fundamentals translate across every event type: know your audience, anchor the experience in something authentic to them, and sweat every detail.

When people asked what kind of party it was going to be, I said "elevated basketball." They did not always know what that meant. By the end of the night, they understood.

One More Thing

The New York Knicks had quite a year. So did we. Sometimes the stars align, and sometimes you just have to plan for them to. Congrats on the 2026 NBA Championship, and Mazel Tov to my son, who studied hard and partied equally.
